Finish One Thing · illustrated habit cards

A folder
full of starts.

Openings polished over and over. Middles missing. Nothing ever called done. The story in your drafts, the sketch that's half inked, the song that's still a voice memo.

Finish One Thing is a deck of illustrated habit cards for one creative piece. Each go, you move one part one step and mark it. Every mark is a step, and the steps add up to done.

  • Stories, drawings, songs, comics
  • Foundation cards free
  • Print or use on screen
  • One-time, no subscription
Make one new part: the first free Finish One Thing card

The whole method is one move. Nothing fancy.

Move one part
one step.

Each go, move one part one step: make a missing part rough, or finish a rough part. Opening the file, gathering references or re-polishing a finished part is not a 1.

Missing
Rough
Finished

That's one step: one mark per go. An eight-part story is about 16 steps, eight to make and eight to finish. A missed day takes nothing away. Every mark is a step, and the rest is just… stairs.

Free · the Foundation

Four cards.
One mark per go.

Small on purpose. Each one changes the piece itself, and on any day you either did it or you didn't.

The kit is the staircase.

Same small marks. Growth makes the reps easier. Mastery makes them cleaner. A Challenge is one big step. Add one card when you need it. No complicated system.

Growth

Makes the reps easier

More reps, less friction. Each card changes the moment around a Foundation go: when it starts, how it ends, what to do when a detail or a new idea gets in the way.

  • Work at a set time: Growth card front

Mastery

Makes them cleaner

Cleaner reps. Check one question, change one thing, use it next time, check again. Each loop leaves a lesson you carry into the next piece.

Finish One Thing · the kit

Climb the
whole staircase.

You make things for the love of it, you have a piece you still care about, and you keep starting again instead of finishing.

For a piece you can make with skills and materials you already have: a short story or essay, an illustration or comic page, a song demo, a zine spread. It won't teach you a new craft, and it doesn't promise an audience, income or a finish date. For a big project, you finish one section at a time.

Fair questions.

Why pay when the Foundation cards are free?

The Foundation is the method, and it stays free. The kit is for when a snag shows up: the 15 Growth, Mastery and Challenge cards with their full backs.

What kind of project does this work for?

Anything you can make with skills you already have: a short story or essay, an illustration or comic page, a song demo, a zine spread. A big project works one section at a time.

What if I miss a go?

Nothing resets. The parts you made are still made, and there are no dated boxes to fall behind on.

Will I definitely finish?

Nobody can promise that, and we won't. The marks count what you actually moved. Every challenge has an honest exit: finish it, or drop it on purpose and write down why.

Is this proven?

Each card names its sources and an evidence grade on the back. Most are Grade C: documented practice and our own design. The deck as a whole is new and hasn't been independently tested.

Couldn't I just ask ChatGPT?

It'll give you a plan. Plans were never the problem; making the next part is. The cards sit beside your work. If you like your AI, the kit includes a brief that keeps it on your piece.

Do I need a printer?

No. The cards work on screen, and the sheet can live in a notebook: one box per part, / then ✕. Printing just makes it easier to keep beside the work.
