Leave a Turn in a Familiar Song

Whenyou sing a familiar song during care or play

Sing a song your child enjoys, then pause before a familiar sound, gesture or word. Leave room for any response and continue warmly even if none comes. Use your comfortable family language.

Why it works

The gap in the song is an invitation they can hear.

Start tiny

Sing one line and pause once.

What you’ll notice

An everyday song becomes something you do together.

When it slips

If the pause feels like a test, smile and supply the word yourself. Use movement or humming when words do not fit. Adapt: Birth–1: pause for a sound or movement. 1–3: familiar sound or gesture. 3–6: alternate lines or invent a silly verse.
