Add One Word to Your Child’s Phrase

Whenyour child uses a word or short phrase

Repeat the meaning with one useful extra word: “Truck” becomes “Big truck.” For a child using gestures, name the thing they indicate; for a fluent speaker, add one relevant detail without asking them to repeat you.

Why it works

You can offer a richer sentence without turning your child into a pupil.

Start tiny

Add one descriptive word once.

What you’ll notice

Ordinary talk carries a little more detail, with fewer quizzes.

When it slips

If you start correcting every sentence, drop the lesson voice. Answer their meaning and add just one detail. Adapt: Birth–1: name a noticed object. 1–3: expand one phrase. 3–6: add a descriptive detail; accept signing or communication aids.
