Describe the Next Care Step Before Touching

Whenyou are about to help with dressing or washing

Say the next concrete step before you do it: “I’m sliding your arm into this sleeve.” Offer a small safe participation, such as holding the cloth, and watch for their response. Keep needed care gentle and unhurried.

Why it works

Care contains a conversation, even when the job is a sleeve and a wriggly elbow.

Start tiny

Describe the next movement in one sentence.

What you’ll notice

You include your child in what is happening to their body.

When it slips

Rushing? Name just the next step. If they resist, check discomfort and offer a workable choice of help. Adapt: Birth–1: tell baby before lifting or dressing. 1–3: name one step and invite participation. 3–6: ask which part they want help with.

SafetyNecessary hygiene and safety still happen; never force a painful movement or restrain a child to finish faster.
