Say Goodbye With a Truthful Return Cue
Whenyou leave your child with a trusted caregiver
Say a brief goodbye and name a return cue you can actually honor: “I’ll be back after your snack.” Use the familiar wave or phrase, then leave the trusted caregiver in charge. If the plan changes, update the caregiver promptly.
Why it works
A truthful goodbye gives your child a map of what happens next.
Start tiny
Say goodbye rather than slipping away.
What you’ll notice
You leave with a clear handover and a promise you can keep.
When it slips
If the return time is uncertain, say what you do know and how the caregiver will tell them. Tears do not mean the goodbye failed. Adapt: Birth–1: familiar short goodbye with trusted caregiver. 1–3: concrete event cue. 3–6: discuss sequence and update changes.
