Write a weekly letter from your future self

Whenyou sit down after your chosen weekly meal

Each week for four weeks, write as a plausible you one year ahead. Describe an ordinary day, a decision you stopped postponing and a difficulty that remains. End with one action for this week. At the next letter, check what you did; revise the imagined future using that experience.

Start tiny

Write one future scene and this week’s action.

When it slips

If you describe only rewards, write the decision and work that made them possible.

SafetyChoose an everyday topic; stop if writing becomes overwhelming.

Evidence grade CPractitioner method or editorial idea

Editorial future-self correspondence, informed by Rutchick et al. (2018), Future self-continuity is associated with improved health and increases exercise behavior. Read the source ↗ — The study tested letters to a future self, not this weekly letter from a future self. Grekin et al. (2025), The Effects of Future Self-Continuity Interventions on Behavioral Outcomes in Adults: A Systematic Review of the Literature. Read the source ↗ — Results varied; the combined practice and one-year horizon here are editorial, with no guaranteed behavior change.

Mastery: Inspect your work, apply a specific correction in later practice and check whether it helped.
