State one honest preference each week
Whenyou reach a shared choice during your week
Each week for a month, say what you prefer in one shared decision before automatically agreeing. Start with dinner, a route or an activity: “I would like the quieter place tonight.” Hear the other person’s preference and negotiate. Choose a more consequential topic when this feels manageable.
Start tiny
State a preference in one low-stakes choice.
When it slips
A preference is information to discuss, not an order everyone must follow.
SafetyChoose a relationship where disagreement is safe. You can stop rather than practise in a threatening situation.
Editorial graduated preference practice based on Centre for Clinical Interventions, Assert Yourself! Module 4: How to Behave More Assertively. Read the source ↗ — Documented basic assertion; weekly schedule and selection of shared decisions are editorial.
Mastery: Inspect your work, apply a specific correction in later practice and check whether it helped.
