Take a Child-Paced Outdoor Outing Each Week
Whenyou choose a weekly time to go outside together
Choose a safe nearby place and let your child set a manageable exploring pace. Stop at what catches their attention, observe together and return within your time limit. Repeat weekly with access and weather adaptations.
Why it works
A ten-metre journey can hold more discoveries than a rushed kilometre.
Start tiny
Spend two supervised minutes observing outside or from an accessible doorway.
What you’ll notice
You get a shared adventure without planning a major expedition.
When it slips
If you keep marching toward a destination, choose one safe stopping place before you leave. A sheltered courtyard or window view can be the fallback. Adapt: Birth–1: adult-held or appropriately supported observations. 1–3: short safe stops. 3–6: child chooses a feature to investigate.
SafetySupervise near water, traffic and heights; use safe weather clothing and an accessible route. No tasting unknown plants or touching wildlife.
