Give a skill goal supported practice

Whena development conversation reaches a skill goal

Choose one useful skill with the employee. Give it a real task, protected capacity and an available coach. Review the attempt together; use what they learned to choose the next opportunity.

Make it easier
Use a small, low-risk task you can coach yourself; defer unfamiliar high-risk work until qualified help is available.
Progression
Expand responsibility only when the employee, support and work demands are ready.

Start tiny

Ask which skill they want to practise.
