Offer One Small Job While Cooking
Whenyou start preparing a meal
Offer one safe, real part of the meal: carrying napkins or rinsing a vegetable at a low bowl. Keep doing your own part nearby. Watching is welcome too.
Why it works
A child can join the work before they can do the whole job. One useful piece gives them a place at the table without handing over the kitchen.
Start tiny
Offer one napkin to carry.
What you’ll notice
You prepare dinner with a companion instead of inventing another activity to keep them away.
When it slips
If helping stalls dinner, shrink their part to one item and finish yours. Choose a less hurried meal next time.
SafetyKeep children away from heat, blades, raw meat, breakable dishes and choking hazards. Use a reachable work surface and supervise.
