Wait Ten Seconds Before Taking Over
Whenyour child struggles with a safe task
Keep your hands back for ten seconds while they try. If they still need help, ask “Want a hint or a hand?” and give only the help they choose.
Why it works
When adult hands arrive before a child has finished trying, the difficult step disappears along with the practice. A short wait leaves room for an attempt.
Start tiny
Wait through one safe attempt.
What you’ll notice
You see what they can do before automatically doing it for them.
When it slips
If a deadline is close, say you need to help this time and save practice for a quieter moment. Waiting is not a test they must pass.
SafetyOnly wait when the task is safe. Help immediately with hazards or distress.
