Separate light and shadow before details

Whenyou begin shading your drawing

Look for the largest light and dark areas. Lightly outline the main shadow shape, then shade it as one group. Keep the brightest area as bare paper. Compare the boundary with the subject before adding smaller tones or texture.

Make it easier
Use an opaque object in steady side light; keep only paper-light and one dark tone.
Make it harder
Add a middle tone while keeping the lightest and darkest groups distinct.

Start tiny

Mark the boundary of one shadow.
