Sew a patch over a hole

Whena woven garment develops a hole

Use a fabric patch of similar weight, needle and thread. Choose sound surrounding fabric; a patch must reach beyond the weakened area.

Steps
  1. Fold raw patch edges inward and hold the patch over the hole with pins or clips. Keep the opposite garment layer clear.
  2. Knot the thread; come up through the patch near its edge, then down just outside the edge into the garment.
  3. Repeat close stitches around the perimeter, catching patch and garment. Secure the final stitch with two loops; remove all pins.

Start tiny

Hold a suitable scrap over the hole.

SafetyUse a prefinished patch if folding is awkward. Do not use this repair on protective clothing.
