Replace worn waistband elastic

Whena casing waistband loses its stretch

Choose a waistband with elastic sliding freely inside a sound fabric channel. Get matching-width elastic, needle, thread and a safety pin.

Steps
  1. Unpick a short section of the channel seam; remove the old elastic. If sewn through, stop and get alteration help.
  2. Cut elastic to a comfortable waist fit plus overlap. Feed it around with a closed safety pin; secure the other end outside and avoid twists.
  3. Overlap ends 1 cm. Sew a rectangle and X with small backstitches. Check fit, then stitch the channel closed.

Start tiny

Check whether the elastic moves freely in its channel.

SafetyFit the elastic before final sewing. Remove every pin before wearing; never cut through the waistband fabric.
